No Refund Band review October 5 2012…

THE NO REFUND BAND

THE NO REFUND BAND

SELF-RELEASED

BLUES IS MY BUSINESS–COME DOWN SLOW–ELEANOR RIGBY–FALL AGAIN–JUST TO BE BLUE–GOT WHISKEY–ONE MORE DRINK–SOUL SHINE–SPAIN PRELUDE–NEVER BEEN TO SPAIN–TOP SIDE–WILLIE THE WIMP

Altho “The No Refund Band” is the band of the same name’s debut effort, the band has been together in some form for several years.  Hailing from Texas, the core of the band is vocalist\guitarist Ricky Jackson, Rik Robertson on bass, and rhythm guitarist Mike Crownover.  Add in a killer horn section and these guys put out a powerhouse sound that lends itself well to the clever mix of originals and covers on these twelve cuts.

Ricky has a voice that sounds like a combination of David Clayton-Thomas and Son Seals, and starts the party with a chugging, uptempo take on the problems of the world today, “The Blues s My Business–and business is good!”  A quirky echo-effect vocal and the obligatory string arrangements with muted trumpet adds to the haunting vibe of “Eleanor Rigby,” which climaxes with a frenetic guitar solo.  A cool flamenco intro kicks off the band’s funky cover of “Never Been To Spain,” while the horn section gets a workout on the set-closer, “Willie The Wimp and his Cadillac coffin.”

The fellows show off their versatility with some sweet acoustic blends, too.  Check out Ricky’s ode to being happy to be alive and “on the Top Side of the ground,” and he spins a tale of a man who’s close to “hittin’ the bottom,” and asks for “One More Drink.”

Our favorite included the vocal talents of Tommie Lee Bradley, who takes the female lead and gives a real touch of sass to a humorous duet of two bickering lovers who, at the end of the day, really DO deserve each other, if for no other reason than “Just To Be Blue.”

The No Refund Band has come out swinging with their-self-titled debut.  Clever lyrics, excellent musicianship, and a lead singer that can stand toe-to-toe with the best of ’em makes for a highly-entertaining set!  Until next time….Sheryl and Don Crow.
