NINA MASSARA

WATCH ME

CSP RECORDS  CSP 1069

WATCH ME–BIG EASY–IMPOSSIBLE TO RESIST–ALL THAT I’LL EVER NEED–SOMETHING NEW–YOU AIN’T UP TO IT–CRAZY–DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE–FULL GROWN WOMAN

We were absolutely blown away upon first listening to Danish-American siren Nina Massara and her stateside debut, “Watch Me,” for Texas-based CSP Records.  She’s got killer good looks, a cross between Veronica Lake and “Casablanca”-era Bacall, with a sassy vocal style that simply oozes a sultry earthiness all over these nine Americana-flavored originals composed by Ray Weaver and producer Morten Wittrock.

She kicks off with the empowered, six-inch stiletto-heeled strut of a woman who dares you to “Watch Me break a few more of your taboos!”  A fancy slide break drives the ode to her father’s home of New Orleans, the gentle lope begging us to come with her, “back to The Big Easy to let the good times roll!”  Hans Nybo’s sax kicks up the heat on Nina’s story of “hangin’ around this old town too long,” looking for “Something New.”  She closes the set as it opened, with her no-holds-barred looks at life as a “Full Grown Woman, and I need a full-grown man!”  Peter Marott’s trumpet and Morten’s piano give this one a cool ragtimey feel.

Our favorite was easy.  Nina and Colin Brooks, formerly of Band Of Heathens join vocal forces as they give up many of their vices, but the pull of love on both of them is “Impossible To Resist!”

Nina Massara has lived in Denmark, New Orleans, and now, here in Nashville.  Her musical boundaries are just as widely-varied, and, with this set, dares you to “Watch Me” succeed!   Until next time…Sheryl and Don Crow, The Nashville Blues Society.
