THE BAREFOOT DOCTORS

NEXT PATIENT PLEASE

GROOVE SOUND MUSIC

YOUR HOODOO MAN–CHEVROLET-DANGEROUS MOOD–EVERYDAY I HAVE THE BLUES–BELLY OF THE BLUES–THIS OL’ WORLD–I DON’T NEED NO DOCTOR–BLOODY WELL RIGHT–LOOKING FOR ELVIS–DON’T LET NOBODY DRAG YOUR SPIRIT DOWN–PARIS OOH LA LA–ZIP SKIRT

The Barefoot Doctors are a quite versatile group who have been “Healing Soles Since 2010” from Cambridge in the UK.  On their latest set, “Next Patient Please,” they blend blues, rock, and a touch of gospel with today’s contemporary sounds, creating a highly-danceable groove! On these dozen cuts, vocals are handled more than capably by two fine singers—Stella Hensley and Myke Clifford. the latter also on sax and flute.  Ex-Climax Blues Band mate Chris Newman is on guitar, along with Kimberley Rew.

We had several highlights.  Myke is on vocal and gets his “sax” on, with a cool, very-rare cover of Supertramp’s “You’re Bloody Well Right,” and comes back a bit later to give “Every Day I Have The Blues” a jazzed-up, partly-scat-sung, good times groove!  Stella is on vocal on a funky read of the Brother Ray/Steve Marriott classic, “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” presented herein over a Meters-styled groove.  Stella plays the woman who knows exactly what she wants, as she tells a lover to “get on the floor, baby, and get undressed,” the sultry, “Zip Skirt.”  Now, if we were all in Paris, we’d say “Ooh La La,” as Stella rides this sexy Grace Potter song for all it’s worth!

We had two favorites, at the opposite ends of the musical spectrum.  First up, the slide’s the rule on the gospel-drenched blues of Eric Bibb’s “we’re all walkin’ up the hill—Don’t Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down!”  Then, Stella will sho’ nuff put every man’s blood pressure on the rise with her sultry, sexy, come-hither, “look out baby, I’m in a Dangerous mood!”

The Barefoot Doctors ought really  be more well-known on both sides of the Pond.  “Next Patient, Please,” has it all–excellent vocals and instrumentation, and a sweet choice of material.  More, please!   Until next time…Sheryl and Don Crow, The Nashville Blues And Roots Alliance.
