Blues Meets Girl is an outstanding collaboration featuring two of the finest voices in contemporary blues.  We’ve been fans of London-born Mr. Downchild ever since we saw him play his one-man show on the shores of Kentucky Lake at the Kenlake Hot August Blues Fest many moons ago.  He’s a guitar whiz and a harpoon man and vocalist of the highest order, and, for this set, he has joined forces with Kasimira, a talented singer from Texas whose career usually revolved around musical theater.  However, when Mr. Downchild called her for this collaboration, she couldn’t resist.  The result is the dazzling “Blues Meets Girl,” fifteen originals and covers that allow for playful duets, torch songs, and stone blues rockers.  When you listen to this set, you might get the feeling that Robert Johnson cozied up to Memphis Minnie or Ma Rainey, and these songs were what they created!

An Excello groove and visual imagery of “your Nightgown on my bedpost” sets the tone for our two lovers to renew their tryst as soon as possible, on this playfully-seductive duet.  Kasimira takes the lead vocal on “Listen Up Boys,” as she tells everybody that she belongs to “her special man!”  A bit later, she goes all torchy on us with the similarly-themed “Special Man,” and how “I’m so blue when he’s away!”  Mr. Downchild is full of swagger on the double-entendre’-filled “I’m Your Handy Man, fix most anything for you,” while Kasimira takes us down a similar path with those harp-fueled “Fishing Blues!”

We had one favorite presented two ways.  The first version of “Home To My Baby” is set over a cool cha-cha arrangement, wile the version that closes the set digs a tougher, more West Side groove, a la vintage Junior Wells.

Pairing a wily veteran bluesman the caliber of Mr. Downchild with a theater-trained voice such as Kasimira makes for a unique listening experience indeed.  Dig what happens on these grooves when “Blues Meets Girl!”  Until next time…Sheryl and Don Crow.
