JIMMY CARPENTER

SOUL DOCTOR

GULF COAST RECORDS

SOUL DOCTOR–WHEN I MET YOU–WILD STREAK–LOVE IT SO MUCH–NEED YOUR LOVE SO BAD–WANNA BE RIGHT–ONE MINT JULEP–WRONG TURN–LO FI ROULETTE–YEAH MAN

Sax man Jimmy Carpenter has been on the scene for some 35 years, and old-school fans of Jimmy Thackery might remember Jimmy blowin’ sax for him back in the day.  He’s been friends with Mike Zito for years, and now Jimmy Carpenter joins the Gulf Coast Records family with his release of “Soul Doctor.”  Jimmy’s on sax and vocals, and has Nick Schnebelen and Mike Zito on guitar on two cuts.  This is a soul-rockin’ blues party, and Jimmy had a hand in writing seven of the ten cuts.

Jimmy’s sho’ nuff got his Ph.D. in the blues, and the “Soul Doctor is always on the line,” with Nick on guitar.  Mike Zito fires off a sweet slide solo in “Wild Streak,” a roadhouse rocker that serves as a tribute to Jimmy’s life partner, Carrie Stowers,  “who “makes my knees weak.”  Jimmy’s got a gypsy soul, but he’s always been torn between a life on the road versus a “normal life,” and that struggle plays out in the cool, second-line rhythms of his ode to New Orleans, “Love It So Much.”

We had two favorites, too.  Jimmy gets right down to the heart of the matter on a soulful read of Little Willie John’s “Need Your Love So Bad,” and takes a turn thru the Delta with his original, “Wrong Turn.”  It’s a cautionary tale where our hero is plagued throughout life knowing he “always went left when I shoulda gone right!”  Jimmy is on guitar on this one, and swaps licks with slide man Trevor Johnson.

Jimmy Carpenter is a road dog forever, doin’ what he loves.  He’ll tell you straight up that there ain’t no future living in the past, and the “Soul Doctor” in in the house!   Until next time…Sheryl and Don Crow, The Nashville Blues And Roots Alliance.
